About Dermot Heslin
I'm an accredited psychotherapist, qualified in 2017 and working with adults in Dublin city centre and online.
My approach
I work integratively and humanistically. Humanistic means I start from the belief that each of us has the capacity to change and grow, and that it’s the relationship between therapist and client, more than any technique, that brings about change. Integrative means I combine learning from different schools of psychotherapy rather than fitting you to a single model.
During difficult periods (and sometimes in childhood), we often develop beliefs and patterns that protect us, but that eventually hold us back. Therapy is a chance to notice those patterns, to reflect on what you actually want, and to find new ways to cope and to thrive. Each week you’ll have the opportunity to explore these patterns, and to be heard without judgement.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Alongside talking, I’m trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Levels 1 and 2, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute). This approach pays attention to the body as well as the mind — to posture, breath, tension and movement — because the effects of trauma and early childhood difficulties are often held physically, rather than remembered in words.
Working this way can make it possible to process experiences that feel impossible to think or talk your way through.

Background
Before training as a psychotherapist I worked in software development, mostly in the financial sector, and later in the not-for-profit sector supporting people to develop leadership skills through volunteering. It was there I saw how much people can grow through periods of real difficulty when they have the right support — and that ultimately led me to this work.
